Feed my mind with Carly Taylor : Confidence vs. Competence - How They Work Together
Confidence and competence—two words we often hear, but what do they really mean, and how do they shape our lives? Competence is about what you can do—your skills and knowledge. Confidence, on the other hand, is your belief in your ability to use those skills, even in challenging situations.
Here’s the tricky part: confidence and competence don’t always match. You might be highly skilled yet doubt yourself, holding back from opportunities. Or you might feel confident but lack the skills, leaving you unprepared when it matters most. The magic happens when confidence and competence work together—when you tap into courage and trust yourself enough to try, and in turn develop the skills to grow stronger.
For many of us, doubt creeps in, whispering, “What if I’m not good enough?” But here’s the truth: confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything; it grows when you take action, learn, and keep showing up. The Latin word for confidence is con (with) and fidere (trust), so to have confidence is to have trust in yourself.
Take-Home Tip - Start small. This week, choose one task slightly outside your comfort zone. Prepare as best as you can, and then do it. Celebrate the effort, not the outcome. Each attempt builds competence, and with it, confidence.
Remember, confidence is a journey, not a destination. You are exactly as you are right now, so now take that next step. 💛
